From Survival to Service. From South Sudan to Africa
Joseph Akok Deng’s story began in South Sudan. As one of Sudan’s Lost Boys, Joseph was separated from his home and everything familiar to him.
His early journey was marked by loss, uncertainty, hardship, and the daily struggle to survive. Yet even through the most difficult moments, God was preparing Joseph for a greater purpose.
Joseph’s journey eventually brought him to the United States, where he was given the opportunity to build a new life. Although America became his new home, Joseph never forgot South Sudan or the people and communities he left behind.
As Joseph built his life in America, he carried with him a deep desire to one day give back to South Sudan and help the people of his homeland.
His past became more than a story of survival. It became the foundation of his calling.
After establishing his life in America, Joseph felt God calling him to turn his desire to give back to South Sudan into action.
On December 9, 2008, Joseph founded what began as South Sudan Life Care Mission, a Christian ministry created from his desire to serve the people and communities of his homeland.
For Joseph, the mission was deeply personal. South Sudan was where his journey began, and he wanted to use the opportunities he had been given in America to bring hope and help back to the people he had never forgotten.
What began with a heart for South Sudan has grown into a broader vision for Africa. Today, as Life Care Mission, the organization is committed to bringing hope, healing, and faith to communities across Africa through practical service, sustainable projects, Christian ministry, and the hope of Jesus Christ.
As Life Care Mission expands its reach, South Sudan remains at the heart of Joseph’s story and the foundation upon which the mission was built.
Joseph uses his personal experiences, relationships, and faith to connect supporters in America with people and communities in need. Life Care Mission works alongside local leaders to identify practical needs and develop solutions that respect the dignity, faith, and strength of each community.
Joseph’s journey has come full circle. The child who once needed help is now helping others find hope.
Joseph’s vision reaches far beyond meeting immediate needs. He dreams of creating lasting opportunities that will strengthen families and transform communities for generations.
Life Care Mission’s future includes building a permanent school, providing housing for pastors and mission workers, expanding access to basic medications, improving technology and communication, and creating meaningful opportunities for mission teams to serve.
The goal is not simply to provide temporary assistance. It is to help communities become stronger, healthier, better equipped, and rooted in the hope of Jesus Christ.
Joseph’s journey began with survival.
It continued with his desire to give back to South Sudan.
Today, that calling is growing into a movement of faith, restoration, and lasting change across Africa.
Joseph’s story reminds us that God can transform hardship into purpose and survival into service.
